FLAC
FLAC is a lossless audio compression/decompression format, which means FLAC maintains a small file size, although larger than mp3, with excellent quality. FLAC is an open standard, free to use, and non patented, unlike MP3.

OGG
OGG is a multimedia container format. It may be used for audio and video. Ogg sounds great -- better quality than mp3.

MP3
MP3 is a popular lossy audui compression/decompression. It is not an open standard and covered by patents. It's use is not recommended, but is supported only due to its popularity.
