Episode 79: The Tripod of Weight Loss

A little research on my part produced the following results on weight loss. First, muscles use energy all the time. This means that even while you sleep, muscles are consuming calories. This is good. Second, fat does not use energy all the time. Fat is the energy that your body uses when it can't get any other energy (food). This means that you want more muscles than fat if you are serious about losing weight.

You don't really gain muscles by doing aerobic exercises such as running or walking. (You get some, of course, if you are starting out from zero but in the long run, your body only creates the muscles it needs.) Therefore, in order to lose weight more efficiently, we should get some muscles. How? By lifting weights.

Lifting weights is one part of a tripod of weight loss. The other two legs are watching our diet and getting aerobic exercise - walking. From this week - today - we should include a little weight lifting in our exercise routine. This does not mean run out, join a gym, pump iron until your shoulders bulge out over your ears. It means lifting something a little bit heavier than you usually lift. Lift it ten times, rest 45 secons, lift again. We should do this after stretching. We should also do this at least three times a week.

Before starting any exercise or diet routine,

check with a medical professional.
