Podcast Episode Summary
One in three young workers start the working week filled with dread. Whether its the thought of having to work through lunch, sit through endless meetings, talk to the office bore or avoid the office letch, very few of us begin the week with a genuine spring in our step. But what would make you happier at work and banish that Monday morning misery?
Well according to a new employment study by Kelloggs, a little bit of flexibility and consideration goes a long way. It seems the UK working nation, perhaps recognising the tough year experienced by most businesses, are happy to swap cash for personalised working hours. More flexible working to incorporate Friday afternoons off in the summer, taking your birthday off, time off to watch big sporting events and get in some early Christmas shopping are all valued as more beneficial to morale than a bump in the bank balance. With workers feeling under pressure to start earlier, finish later and lunch at their desk, its no surprise that a quarter of employees say just being able to take their full hour for lunch would motivate them!
Whatever size company you work for, getting your boss to make simple changes and offer more personal flexibility is likely to make you feel more in control and thus happier as a result. Watch the video with work-life balance expert Helen Whitten for simple tips on how to beat those working blues.
