After the war, they returned to their hometown of Dubno and found all 8,000 Jews, including their parents and relatives, in mass graves, and their home taken over by Ukrainians. Blinded by glaucoma in 2006, Michael edited and published his late wife Regina’s memoir, GRIT: A Pediatrician’s Odyssey From a Soviet Camp to Harvard, about a family’s struggle with cancer.
