Podcast Episode Summary

(Rebroadcast) The near poor are defined as those 57 million Americans with household incomes of between $20,000-$40,000 per year. Sociologist KATHERINE NEWMAN says that because government policies address the needs of the poor and politicians seek the support of the middle and upper classes, the near poor are often overlooked. In her new book, The Missing Class, Newman looks at the lives of these Americans many of who are just one step away from sliding into poverty.
