Podcast Episode Summary

Somebody once said to me "You can dance if you want to, you can leave your friends behind. Becuase your friends don't dance and if they don't dance, well, they're no freinds of mine." That person was Ivan Doroschuk, the leader of Men Without Hats, the song was "Safety Dance" and the year was around 1984 - 27 years ago! Most people considered Men Without Hats a one-hit wonder band, but, I held on to those words, and followed Men Without Hats for the next several years. They, in fact, had a few other hits, such as "Pop Goes the World" and a large number of other good songs that had powerful lyrics behind what appeared to be simple song titles and happy beats. I never got to see Men Without Hats live in the 80's so when they announced a 2011 tour, I mad a plan to see the band and speak to Ivan about why so long since the last tour. While I van has a strong, baritone singing voice, I found he's actually quite soft-spoken and has a bit of the French-Canadian accent so you'll have to listen closely to the interview. The performance by Men Without Hats was exhilarating and very refreshing to see so much energy displayed on stage from Ivan who was obviously enjoying himself. Men Without Hats is working on a new record that goes back to their synth-dance sound and will probably go back on the road again next year.
