This episode is an interview with Prof. Carl Ruck, titled “Mushrooms, Myth and Mithras: The Drug Cult that Civilized Europe” and is being released on Friday, Sept. 23, 2011. My interview with Carl was recorded on Sept. 22, 2011. Today Carl Ruck is back for his 3rd interview with us to discuss his explosive new book, Mushrooms, Myth and Mithras, The Drug Cult that Civilized Europe. Carl A.P. Ruck is Professor of Classics at Boston University, an authority on the ecstatic rituals of the god Dionysus. With the ethno-mycologist R. Gordon Wasson and Albert Hofmann, he identified the secret psychoactive ingredient in the visionary potion that was drunk by the initiates at the Eleusinian Mystery. In Persephone’s Quest: Entheogens and the Origins of Religion, he proclaimed the centrality of psychoactive sacraments at the very beginnings of religion, employing the neologism “entheogen” to free the topic from the pejorative connotations for words like drug or hallucinogen. Carl’s publications include: IG II2 2323 The List of Victors in Comedy at the Dionysia (Leiden: Brill, 1967). Pindar: Selected Odes (Ann Arbor, MI: University of Michigan Press, 1967), with W. Mattheson. The Road to Eleusis: Unveiling the Secret of the Mysteries (New York, NY: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1978), with R. Gordon Wasson, Albert Hofmann, and B.D. Staples. Persephone’s Quest: Entheogens and the Origins of Religion (New Haven, CT: Yale, 1986), with R. Gordon Wasson, Stella Kramrish, and Jonathan Ott. The World of Classical Myth: Gods and Goddesses, Heroines and Heroes (Durham, NC: Carolina Academic Press, 1994), with Blaise Daniel Staples. Intensive Latin: First Year and Review (Durham, NC: Carolina Academic Press, 1997). The Apples of Apollo: Pagan and Christian Mysteries of the Eucharist (Durham, NC: Carolina Academic Press, 2000), with Clark Heinrich and B.D. Staples. Ancient Greek: Intensive Review and Reference (Durham, NC: Carolina Academic Press, 2001). Sacred Mushrooms of the Goddess: Secrets of Eleusis (Oakland, CA: Ronin Publishing, 2006). Mushrooms, Myth, and Mithras: The Drug Cult that Civilized Europe (San Francisco, CA: City Lights Books, 2011), with Mark Alwin Hoffman and José Alfredo González Celdrán.
