Podcast Episode Summary
This is the second message in Pastor Jin Ho’s three-week series on faith.
The shield of faith is mentioned in the passage where Paul describes the “armor of God” in Ephesians 6:10-17, specifically verse 16: “…take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” The “evil one” is Satan, who is real and wants to destroy the people of God. “Flaming arrows” have poisonous tips, such as secular, worldly principles and philosophies. Doubt is raised in God’s laws and the prominent thinking is: “Do whatever you want, whatever pleases you.” The flammable pitch of these arrows intends to burn our shields, inciting sinful desires and fear. Obeying sinful desires results in guilt and shame, and thus generates fear. But our shield of faith can distinguish all flaming arrows. God told Abraham in Genesis 15:1, “…I am your shield.” Abraham and others in the “Hall of faith,” detailed in Hebrews 11, trusted God despite the doubts, uncertainties and fears that threatened them. We Christians today are in possession of the shield of faith, but we have to take it up and use it; this means acting upon our faith and the promises of God. Let us trust in God, not in what have, whether money, possessions, or power. Let us strengthen our faith by seeking the Word of God, receiving it and living it.
