The Burrill Report (January 3, 2012): Genentech: The Beginnings of Biotech

Download Now

Podcast Episode Summary

When Roche acquired Genentech in 2009, its market cap exceeded that of Pfizer’s, then the world’s largest pharmaceutical company. Genentech stands as the great success story from the biotechnology industry, but in many ways—from its academic alliances to its partnerships with Big Pharma—it created the game plan for the industry that would follow. Historian Sally Smith Hughes charts the early days of Genentech in her newly released book Genentech: The Beginnings of Biotech. We spoke to Hughes and Genentech co-founder Herb Boyer about the early days of this pioneering company, how it evolved against a backdrop of heated political debates ranging from the regulation of recombinant technology to the patenting of inventions based on living organisms, and how it shaped the biotechnology industry.
