This week our attention turns to the legendary Frankfurt club U 60311 and its two long term residents George Perry and Peter Latino... The U 60311 opened in October 1998 its doors in an abandoned metro subway in the centre of Frankfurt's bank and shopping district. The place has been transformed to a night club venue with great artistic and architectural effort and construction skills which had been awarded numerous times and praised as a piece of trendsetting architecture. Right from the beginning the motto and intention of the U 60311 - (U stands for Underground plus the postcode) - was to focus on fine electronic music and soon a national and international elite of DJs appeared in the venue. Carl Cox, Jeff Mills, Paul van Dyk, Sven Väth, Fatboy Slim, Deep Dish, Marco Carola, Mousse T and new aspiring talents like Felix Kröcher, Sven Wittekind or Frank Kvitta, to name just a few! The club has a capacity of 1.000 guests; They can enjoy the music on two floors which are separated by a sound absorbing glass wall. The smaller second floor features an own entrance and can thus be run as a club on its own if required (the so-called "U Bar"). The renowned series of mix-compilations U 60311 compilation techno division and U 60311 compilation house division - by resident artists like Chris Liebing, Kid Alex, Karotte, Carl Cox, Gayle San, DJ Rush etc. - are highly acclaimed for both, critics and music lovers and are demonstrations of state-of-the-art club vibes! Reader polls from national music magazines like Raveline or Groove voted the U 60311 during the years of its existence as No. 1 or alternately No. 2 of Germany's most favoured night spots. In the year 2006 a refurbishment took place and changed partially the general impression of the premises by adding colour and seats for chilling and chatting. The following interview has been conducted with two of the clubs` best known and longest active resident DJs, Peter Latino and George Perry, our guest DJs this week!
Interview Q: "When and how did you become a resident at the club?" (PL): "That was back in the summer of 1999, the club had been open for just a few months when the manager at that time asked me if I could play at the U-Bar (called "311" nowadays) 3 days later... I said I would, and nearly pissed my pants in excitement for three days straight in the process. There was a festival in the city called "Sound Of Frankfurt" at that very evening, and the city was PACKED with thousands of ravers! I was booked more frequently since that inaugural date and became a resident on the mainfloor about 6 months later. Ill never forget that time, it was WICKED!!!" (GP): "To be honest, I became a part of the resident crew (at least partially) due to my long friendship with Peter (who has by now the longest DJ residence there from all of us) and, of course, due to my "special" sound that I really established within Frankfurts nightlife over the years and for which I carved out its own niche, step by step." Q: "I was just about to ask... What do you guys play in there, what is your trademark sound?" (GP): "Im the "deep" kind of guy. I play Deephouse, Deep techy sounds, a bit of Techhouse." (PL): "Well, I kind of evolved over the last 11 years; I used to play everything from House to Latin House to Uplifting House, you name it! My style has whatever become more techy over time; Today, I spin a healthy mixture of House and Techno. I guess I can be called a "Techhouse" DJ then *laughs*" Q: "How would you describe the club in its entirety? Any reasons why people SHOULD have been there at least once in their lifetime?" (GP): "The club is pure effing UNDERGROUND, metaphorically and literally *laughs*. Imagine having a party in a London underground tube station, you'll get a good impression what's it like at the U60..." (PL): "Its truly one of a kind. We have received numerous architecture awards and are constantly being praised from ravers and magazines as one of the best (sometimes THE best) clubs in Germany since the clubs` inception. The Line up is always- and has always been- mindboggling and state-of-the-art. PLUS, you can still see parts of the original escalator from the venues` subway station days in the entrance area, that's the icing on the cake *laughs* Q: "Can you give us an impression about the clubs` significance and impact on the regional/ national scene and nightlife in general?" (PL): "Well, in my opinion....I think, after more than eleven years of activity, the club is definitely very influential and significant, if not vital not only in Frankfurts nightlife, but for Germany's nightlife in general as well. Every weekend, we have visitors from all over the country- whether from the countryside and suburbs or from other metropolises and music capitals as well. As long as they keep on coming, I think we definitely have some impact on the nations nightlife! Frankfurt in general still has a major significance within the electronic music scene, the city has its very own vibration. For example, even when every other location is closed, the bass is still booming from the underground... our afterhour "Afterburner" with national and international top acts is among the most successful and longest running afterhour sessions in the entire nation, including Berlin!" (GP): "As Peter said....its a world famous club in a one-of-a-kind location with state-of-the-art (and even better!) bookings." Q: "Time to get personal now....What was your best/ most memorable/ most legendary experience that you associate with the club?" (GP): "The resurrection of the "Hafentunnel" festival in 2009, organized and executed from the U60311 crew. History continued after 8 years with an absolutely MINDBLOWING Lineup and 3 days of madness in the process!" (PL): "Oh boy....There have been some memorable moments in 11 years. But I will probably never forget the night when I was dragged onto the stage in the middle of my birthday party, suddenly being a part of the Go-Go dance performance!!! I will SPECIFICALLY never forget how hesitant I was at first and how I tried to fight it off *laughs out loud*" Q: "What's the most bizarre experience you ever had there? Hehe." (GP): "10 pm, club opening, no mixer there but instead its parts lying on the technicians desk. And of course, no technician in sight!" (PL) "...just read above: my most memorable experience!" *laughs out even louder*" Q: "What does your personal future hold for you in store, spoken in terms of the club?" (GP): "I'm just gonna continue to tell a story with my sound and send the audience on a journey every time again." (PL): "Of course, I want to remain a part of our resident DJ pool and I'm looking forward for numerous great nights behind the decks! I will also again be a part of the 2010 "U60311" tour all over Germany and bordering countries. Its loads of fun whenever our crew is together on the road! Furthermore, I wanna take care of our young, up-and-coming talent. Hence I'm the longest active resident DJ there, I see myself in a type of "father" role to them and the residents in general." Q: "Thanks for taking away my questions before I can even ask them! *laughs* Who is the "young blood" and who do you consider the "breakout" stars to watch out for in the future?" (PL): "We have just recently redefined our resident DJ pool. All of them are to be taken very seriously, whether as DJs or as producers! There will always be one who is more on the road than the others, but from a quality point of view, we all deliver more than just the elemental requirements of deejaying. I'm really really proud of our crew, and therefore EVERYBODY should be kept in mind!" Interview conducted by Chris Kionke Tracklistings Peter Latino 01. Intro (by Peter Latino) 02.
