With a hot summer already predicted this year power generators are bracing themselves for extra high demand on the hottest days as more and more people switch on their airconditioners. In South Australia where the problem is particular acute, a trial is testing a device which turns off some air conditions for brief periods during peak demand to save power. But in Canberra a team of scientists is working on an airconditioner which would be powered by the sun.
