Reggae is a unique musical genre that can be traced back to Jamaica in the late 1960s. Today, it is not uncommon for the term reggae to be used in a loose manner that is used to encompass all types of music from Jamaica. This is not entirely accurate, as reggae should really only refer to a very specific style that originates from rocksteady and ska.
Reggae is based upon a distinct rhythmic style that has the characteristics of ska, which is also known as offbeat. Ska is actually faster paced than reggae and rocksteady. Reggae followers and those who study the music will tell you that this style really places its accents on the second and forth beats in each bar, with the rhythm guitar used to emphasize the third beat, or to hold the chord while the second or forth beat is played.
